This blog started as a week-by-week look at our lives in 2010 (hence the address) in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Now, with the closing of my other blog, from-russia, I've decided to extend this blog to cover 2011 as well (despite the address--which really bugs me now that it's inaccurate).

week nine

This is what I call "meat jello"--three different kinds. It's a delicacy here...and no one back home believes me. No, I've never eaten it.

The photo isn't great because I got shooed away after taking it (and pretending to delete it--I learned my lesson the very hard way about deleting forbidden photographs. I would give a lot to have back a photo I deleted at the orphanage of Lexi playing with her friend.). Why people are so paranoid about GROCERY STORES being photographed, I don't know. But most have signs up prohibiting photography. I didn't see a sign here, but the ban is in effect.

  1. I think this is an English treat, too. My friend Olga loves this stuff, but admitted that they have to make it by rubbing the meat around in their hands - so, ick.

When I lived in NYC I saw a colorful looking group of protesters on the street and was snapping a photo when one of them saw me and I thought I was going to be the victim of violence there, for a while. My gentleman friend saved me by removing the film and giving it to them. I think they were basques protesting Spanish policies or something - I still can't quite figure out why they'd want to do whatever they were doing quite publicly, but be so adverse to having it photographed!

  2. I didn't mind the dish that much. I guess I'm getting less picky, but I still don't enjoy liver.

I've grown really paranoid about taking photos in public in Russia. I was taking photos of an anti-terrorism poster at the university, and I wondered if they would alert the authorities that I was showing an interest in terrorism. So far, no militsia at my door.

  3. I never saw this in England.

My friend says to eat it over boiled potatoes...but I just can't. I am not a very adventurous eater.

  4. What is it? It doesn't tempt me or make my mouth water.

  5. Tina, it's gelatin with meat and vegetables in it.
